Vocal care during winter

Winter can be the most challenging time for your voice as the cooler and drier weather can result in your vocal cords needing TLC.

Winter can be the most challenging time for your voice as the cooler and drier weather can result in desiccated vocal cords, leaving you more susceptible to vocal fatigue and throat infections.

Here are some tips to keep your voice at its best this winter!

Stay hydrated. Dehydrated vocal cords are less flexible and don’t work as well. Dehydration also increases the likelihood of catching a cold or flu. Water is your best choice, however staying hydrated with hot drinks such as herbal teas not only keeps you warm but warms your throat - keeping vocal cords flexible and limber. Hot water mixed with lemon, ginger & honey is a great drink during winter.

Get Steamy! Inhaling steam brings moisture to your vocal cords immediately. Use a humidifier to get your daily dose of steam.

Breathe through your nose. This provides warmth and humidity to your throat and lungs. Breathing through your nose allows for any allergens, germs and viruses to be filtered, a process that doesn’t happen when we breathe through our mouths.

Minimise exposure to air-conditioning. Turing your air-conditioning on heat during the winter months leaves a room with very dry air as all the moisture is taken out resulting in dehydrated vocal cords. If you are exposed for long periods, ensure you stay hydrated, breathe through your nose and use a humidifier.

Exercise. Whilst getting up early on those cold winter mornings may seem difficult, committing to moving your body allows your lymphatic system to work at its best to remove bacteria, germs and viruses from your bloodstream. As the lymphatic system requires breath and exercise to circulate, yoga is an excellent choice!

Accessorise with a scarf! Scarves are not only a cute fashion accessory, but they protect your throat when you’re outside. Just remember to wash them frequently!

Rest up. If you feel like you are getting sick, rest is best. Give your body the break it needs to recover faster.
