Frequently Asked Questions

Are Bio Island DHA, Milk Calcium, Cod Liver + Fish Oil and Lysine Starter for Kids suitable to take from birth?

It is recommended infants aged 0 - 6 months are breastfeed exclusively, please consult your healthcare professional should you have any questions about your personal circumstances or you can contact us via our website for product information. We have formulated our Bio Island kids range to be suitable from 0 months+, as some children may need additional nutrients to help fill nutritional gaps when dietary intake is inadequate. We have ensured that all nutrients from our products have an age appropriate dosage and that each dose falls within the recommended daily intake for these nutrients. Find out more about this below.

Can young infants and children take more than one Bio Island Product at a time?

Each Bio Island product in our kids range contains different ‘active’ ingredients and at different levels, such as DHA, Calcium and Vitamin A & D. Active ingredients is what makes the product work and help the body's nutritional needs when there may be gaps and dietary intake is inadequate. The active ingredients in our product when combined fall within the recommended usage by authorities such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in Australia.

For example the recommended usage from WHO and NHMRC for vitamin D is 5 µg per day for infants between 0 – 6 months old. Our milk calcium contains 2.5µg of vitamin D and our cod liver + fish oil contains 0.75µg of vitamin D, combined the total is 3.25µg for infants from 4 weeks – 6 months old. This may help your child to reach the recommended daily intake for nutrients they may be lacking. It is always important to remember that nutritional supplements should not replace a balanced diet.

Can my child take Bio Island products for a long period of time?

Regular monitoring of your child’s dietary intake is important to ensure a healthy balanced diet is being consumed, though sometimes nutritional gaps may develop and supplements may be considered (though should not replace a balanced diet). Bio Island products are complementary medicines which may be taken for extended periods of time based on the recommended daily usage as shown on the label or as directed by a healthcare professional to assist with dietary inadequacies. Supplements can contain broad spectrum vitamins, minerals and other active ingredients so it is important to always read the label and use only as directed for the duration of taking the product.

It is important to remember that at different periods throughout life your nutritional needs may change, such as during pregnancy or during illness, it is always best to consult your healthcare professional during these times to assess your nutritional needs.

Can children with lactose intolerance take Bio Island Zinc chewable tablets?

Many people find the terms ‘lactose intolerance’ and ‘milk allergy’ confusing. While they may share similar symptoms, they are entirely different conditions. Lactose intolerance is a digestive problem, while a milk allergy involves the immune system.

Lactose intolerance occurs in both adults and children who cannot fully digest lactose, a sugar found naturally in cow’s milk. The reason for this is due to lactase deficiency, which is a natural enzyme made by your intestinal tract that digests lactose. Milk allergies is a true food allergy which causes severe reactions to particular foods triggered by your immune system. You and your child can be tested from milk allergies or lactose intolerances.

Bio Island Zinc chewable tablets, which are suitable for children over 1 year old, aim to supplement zinc in children. With considering the potential condition of lactose intolerance occurring in children we have formulated our chewable zinc tablets with just a small amount of milk powder per tablet. The total intake of milk powder per recommended dose is not enough to cause side effects associated with lactose intolerance.

If your child is diagnosed with a milk allergy, it is best to consult with your health professional or pharmacist before use.

Why is there a difference sometimes in colour/taste/smell for Bio Island products?

We use natural ingredients for all our Bio Island products; this means that the environment and seasons may affect the product's appearance slightly. An example of this is our Bio Island Milk Calcium for Kids which uses a natural dairy source and this may change in colour due to the cow’s diet throughout each season. The small differences is in the inactive properties only, the changes in appearance have no affect on our formulation or nutritional content. This means that colour, tastes or smell of the natural ingredients have no impact on final nutritional product. We always monitor and test each batch to ensure that the nutritional content remains the same, so you can be assured that you are receiving the same benefits each time – which is of the upmost importance. For personal preference you can also mix the capsules contents into food or drink.

Why are the capsules harder or softer sometimes?

Again this is due to using natural ingredients and may slightly change from season to season. For example in winter the capsule shell may feel slightly harder. The capsule shell may also be affected by long distance travel and temperatures it is exposed to during long distance travel; this is why we suggest storing according the products label instructions.

When I open a bottle why is there powder on the inside or rim?

For some of our Bio Island products we have capsules that are a 2 piece capsule containing powder. During transport, the capsules inside the bottles will move around slightly and depending on this movement, may cause very small traces of powder from inside the capsule to coat the inside packaging or rim of the bottle. If this does occur, the capsules are still safe to consume and the capsules are not broken. The traces of powder are safe as they come from the 2 piece capsules, and will have no effect on the capsules.

It is always best to handle the product with care and store as directed.

Have our Bio Island formulations changed?

Our Bio Island products have not changed any part of the formulation or ingredients, and we continue to use the same original formulations. Bio island products are listed complementary medicines and further information about each product can be found when searching the AUST L number for each product.

Customers of our Bio Island products may notice slight variations of font and spacing printed for our expiry and batch information, from time to time. As we increase our production to meet customers’ needs we are implementing more production lines to supply the products you love. Each production line may use varied font and spacing for this information and we will ensure product quality and safety is our highest priority. If you are ever concerned please send the batch and expiry information and we can verify the details for you.

Are there any allergens in Bio Island products?

We have listed allergen information on the relevant product page on our website and have started to introduce onto our labels under our active ingredients list, this is for the most common allergies such as dairy or soya oil. It is always best to consult with your healthcare professional who knows your personal health history before taking a new product if you have an allergy or intolerance.

Please note that all bio island products are gluten free, and contain no artificial preservatives or flavours.
