Now that the colder weather has well and truly hit us all its easy to want to hibernate away and pretend it’s not happening, forgetting all about our summer exercise routines and healthy eating.

Unfortunately, if we do that it can affect our overall health and wellbeing and may leave our body’s susceptible to all kinds of nasty bugs.

So how can we stay as healthy as possible during the colder months? Here are just a few tips to help you make it through.

We cannot talk about staying healthy without mentioning food. It’s natural to turn to indulgent foods during winter as its give us a sense of comfort, especially on a cold winters night. Eating nutritious foods is a powerful way to help prevent disease and a healthy body begins with a healthy immune system. Help to keep your immune system strong by feeding your body with delicious foods packed with beta-carotene, vitamin A, B’s, C, zinc and selenium, just to name a few and add some extra power to that punch by spicing it up with ginger, garlic and turmeric.

Try and maintain your exercise routine over winter is also important. The cold weather can cause you to feel lazier, leaving you with no motivation to exercise. Keep at it. Even incidental exercise like taking the stairs can increase your endorphins and keep your blood pumping fresh oxygen around your body.

And lastly, let’s not forget about sleep.  A good night’s sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. It is a way our bodies refuel and too little especially in times of stress will result in higher cortisol levels, leaving your immune system weaker and more vulnerable to viruses.

Of course, following a healthy lifestyle all year round will ultimately prepare your body to tackle the winter months. And just remember, it’ll be spring before you know it.
